Day 13 – Isaiah 9:6-7

The Birth of a Child and Son

In this devotional, we explore the significance of Isaiah 9:6, which is widely recognized as the most famous Christmas verse. This verse beautifully encapsulates the story of Jesus and his role in the grand narrative of Christmas.

Isaiah 9:6 declares, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” This verse highlights the centrality of Jesus in the Christmas story and foretells the birth of a child and a son who will bear the weight of authority.

The Names of Jesus

The names attributed to Jesus – Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace – hold deep significance in the Old Testament. The phrase “Mighty God” leaves no doubt about the divine nature of the child to be born. Isaiah reveals that this child and son are none other than God himself, emphasizing Jesus’ unique identity.

The Increase of Jesus’ Government and Peace

Isaiah 9:6 speaks of the increase of Jesus’ government and peace, which will have no end. Jesus’ kingdom is characterized as a tiny mustard seed that grows into a tree, symbolizing the continuous growth and impact of his rule throughout history.

The fulfillment of God’s promises on the throne of David and over his kingdom is achieved with justice and righteousness. God actively works to draw nations to himself, establish justice, and bring salvation and redemption to the ends of the earth.

The story of Advent reveals the profound truth of Jesus’ identity as God in human form. The Gospels testify to his divine prerogatives and emphasize his role in creation. Jesus is the God-man who entered his rebellious creation to seek and save sinners, offering forgiveness, and conquering death itself.

The Beauty of Christmas – God’s Love for Sinners

The beauty of Christmas lies in God’s love for sinners, as he willingly enters our rebellion to save us from our sins. Let us joyfully receive our King and celebrate this extraordinary act of love. Merry Christmas!
