Day 18 – Matthew 2:1-12

The Birth of Jesus Christ: A Powerful Story of Worship and Gift-Giving

In the Gospel according to Matthew, we find the account of the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. Wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, guided by a star, seeking the newborn king of the Jews. King Herod and all of Jerusalem were troubled by this news.

Herod’s Inquiry and the Prophecy

Herod gathered the chief priests and scribes to inquire about the birthplace of the Messiah. They revealed that the prophet had foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, in the land of Judah. Herod secretly summoned the wise men and asked them when the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem, telling them to bring him word when they found the child so that he could worship him too.

The Wise Men’s Journey and Worship

The wise men followed the star, which led them to the place where the child was. They rejoiced exceedingly and worshiped the baby Jesus, offering him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. However, they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, so they returned to their own country by another way.

The Power and Meaning of the Story

This story is powerful in many ways. It showcases the sovereignty of God, who guided every moment of this event. It also demonstrates the fulfillment of prophecies, as the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem aligned with the words of the prophet. The wise men’s act of worship and gift-giving reflects the true meaning of Christmas and the celebration of the incarnation of God becoming a man to save his people from their sins.

Embracing the True Spirit of Christmas

As we celebrate this season, let us remember the blessings brought by Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He came to bring eternal life and righteousness to all who turn to him in faith. Just as the wise men worshiped and offered gifts, we too can worship Jesus and share the gift of his love with one another.

Let us rejoice in the story of God’s blessing to the world and embrace the true spirit of Christmas. Merry Christmas, everyone!
