The Glory of the Gospel: Conquering Death
In this Christmas season, we have been exploring the majestic revelation of the Gospel, where the story of the Old Testament seamlessly connects with the New Testament, encompassing all of history. This revelation did not emerge out of thin air in the life of the Messiah; it is the fulfillment of God’s promises.
Insights from the Old Testament
The Old Testament not only provides us with insights about Jesus before His arrival but also equips us with everything we need to know Him as our Lord and Savior, and to recognize Him when He came. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus Himself foretold the events that would transpire – His journey to Jerusalem, betrayal, crucifixion, and resurrection.
Fulfillment of Prophecies
These events were not entirely surprising because they had been prophesied in the Old Testament. Luke 24:1 recounts that on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the disciples went to the tomb with prepared spices, only to find the stone rolled away and the body of Jesus missing. Perplexed, they encountered two men in dazzling apparel who reminded them of Jesus’ words – that He would be delivered into the hands of sinful men, crucified, and rise again on the third day.
Spread of Astonishing News
Upon remembering His words, the disciples shared this astonishing news with others, including Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James. However, the disciples dismissed their accounts as an idle tale and did not believe them. Peter, on the other hand, ran to the tomb, where he found the linen cloths by themselves. He left marveling at the incredible events that had unfolded.
Triumph Over Death
This resurrection is nothing short of amazing – the triumph over our greatest enemy, death. Jesus had already demonstrated His power over death during His ministry, raising a little girl and His friend Lazarus from the dead. He has authority over all creation, including life and death. When Jesus speaks, life emerges from the grave.
Overcoming Disbelief
The disciples’ initial disbelief is understandable, given their firsthand experience of Jesus’ brutal crucifixion. Resurrections do not align with our understanding of the world – death signifies finality. Yet, Jesus fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament, defying human expectations. Isaiah 53 foretold that He would be cut off from the land of the living but see His offspring, prolonging His days.
Promises Regarding Death
We must acknowledge that death is our common enemy. However, for those who are in Christ, Jesus offers promises concerning death. Through Him, we have passed from death to life. We no longer need to fear death; it no longer overcomes us. Though our physical bodies may perish, we will live eternally because Jesus conquered death and rose in victory.
Celebration and Conclusion
Let us celebrate the incarnation of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and the glorious fulfillment of God’s plan. The Gospel illuminates our understanding of history and grants us hope beyond the grave. May this Christmas season remind us of the triumph over death and the everlasting life found in Christ.
Merry Christmas, everybody!
