Day 23 – Matthew 28:18-20

Advent Devotional – The Ascension

In this Advent Devotional, we celebrate the arrival of the Messiah during the Christmas season. We have journeyed through the Old Testament, discovering the glory of the incarnation and the humility of the Lord Jesus leading to His death on the cross.

The Completion of the Sacrifice

With His resurrection, the once-for-all sacrifice is complete, fulfilling the promises of the Old Testament. Now, we shift our focus to the ascension of Jesus, an event that is often overlooked but holds great significance.

The Authority of Jesus

After appearing to His disciples and over 500 eyewitnesses, Jesus affirms His authority in Matthew 28:18-20. He declares that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. Based on this authority, He commissions His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey Him.

Fulfillment of Old Testament Promises

This commission fulfills the promises made in the Old Testament about the Messiah and His kingdom. The goal of the Kingdom of God, as stated in the Old Testament, is being realized through Jesus Christ. He is the king of kings and ruler of the earth, and all nations are under His authority.

The Significance of the Ascension

The ascension of Jesus is a pivotal moment in human history. It affirms the promise in Daniel 7:13-14, where the one like a son of man is given dominion, glory, and an everlasting kingdom over all peoples, nations, and languages.

Our Role in the Fulfillment

As believers in Jesus Christ, we are part of the fulfillment of God’s promises. We are part of the story of the Gospel of the Kingdom. Christmas is not just about the birth of Jesus, but also about His ascension and His ongoing work to establish His kingdom on Earth.

Let us celebrate and proclaim that Jesus is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Merry Christmas, everybody.
