Should Christians “Break Bad”? – 10/5/2013

The final episode of AMC’s smash-hit “Breaking Bad” just aired last Sunday. The series tells the story of a high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with lung cancer. Facing the difficult circumstances of impending death because of a fatal disease, a lack of financial resources, and a wife who is pregnant with their second child, Walter White- the show’s main character- decides to “Break Bad” and use his education and chemistry skills to make and sell meth- hoping to get just enough to provide for his family when he dies. However, as the viewers will learn through an incredibly intense and dark journey, Walter becomes “Heisenberg” and the pain and consequences resulting from turning aside to wickedness and abandoning his integrity are devastating.Oddly for Hollywood, the show’s writers, producer, and director do not depict the decisions made by Walter as glorious, rewarding, or satisfying. The flight into darkness draws all the winds of misery and loss that are true when an image-bearer of God drinks from such a cup. The show takes the viewers through astonishing visuals, rewarding cinematography, and a storyline with truly world-class character development. From an artistic perspective: it is simply stellar. The series was a testimony to the creativity and level of depth that a television series can attain. But, what about from a Christian and theological perspective? Is a show like “Breaking Bad”- that shows where depravity leads- something that Christians should support, make, or attempt to emulate? What about the depictions of evil? Can we learn something from a show that depicts evil and its consequences in such a way?Should Christian filmmakers “Break Bad”?Listen-in as we interview Marcus Pittman from Crown Rights Media. Marcus tells the story, brings some perspective, and gives a call for Christians to create art and tell stories that are as true as “Breaking Bad”- but, better.Apologia Radio
